This module is aimed at practitioners working within Dementia care services including acute care and community care environments. It is carefully designed to deliver up to date theory and to allow discussion of advancements in practice including new interventions and technological developments. The taught content will be linked to learners’ experiences allowing critical discussion of practice with other learners.
This module enables learners to gain knowledge and understanding of the care of an individual who has Dementia. The role of the health care practitioner within various care environments will be explored. Learners will be supported to gain a deeper understanding and analysis of care and the use of technologies in practice. Therapeutic interventions are examined in relation to the management of physical symptoms, prevention of complications and provision of evidenced based practice. The function of the multi-professional team will be explored, including specialist roles. Decision making will be discussed in relation to the management of the individual’s care including legal and ethical issues, use of protocols and resource allocation. Support of individuals and relatives and the importance of follow up and support groups will be considered.
